Even Rebecca Black hates ‘Friday’

BLOG 1 Comment

The most annoyingly viral clip on YouTube, Rebecca Black’s ‘Friday’ had, as of just a few hours ago, 64 million views.

We wrote about YouTube sometimes gets it all wrong here.

Somewhere in between “gaining” 1.189 million dislikes, Rebecca Black, no doubt now depressed and lacking any self-esteem, has pulled the pin.

For those of you lucky (or unlucky) enough to see the original clip, it featured all the hallmarks of a ridiculous and amateur music video:

  • pre-pubescent teens
  • a teenager who can’t sing
  • auto-tune to help the teenager who can’t sing
  • lyrics written by someone who shouldn’t (repetitive words, no meaning, embarrassing)

What did Rebecca Black gain from the clip? She got played on radio in the US. Twelve times. Before the listeners got annoyed.

YouTube also pays producers of viral videos 68% of their traffic intake, which is $1/1,000 page views. Meaning between the “talent” and the “producer”, they made a cool $36,000.

Surprisingly enough, Black’s single on iTunes sold 37,000 times, meaning she has taken from another $26,000 from that endeavour.
